Electronic Turn Signal

Electronic Turn Signal for 60-64 (Early Cars) and 61-63 Forward Control.

To many times the signal lights stop working or difficult because

  • Slide switch is warped because of age or worn out
  • Bowden Cable linkage is binding inside the column.
  • Binding brakes the Directional Control Ring

A worn or warped slide switch will also cause intermittent brakes light/signal lights which will send you in many directions on repair.  We have a simple and cheap solution.  We remove the slide switch and Bowden cable and replace with micro switches rated a 1,000,000,000 pulls.  These microswitches are activated when the directional control ring (inside the column) and moved left or right and activates the control box to signal the left or right signal.   The wires from the column replace the Bowden cable and look like the original.  The Control box replaces the slide switch and plugs into the factory 6 position connector.  You will plug the “red” power wire into the fuse panel to a “switch-on” fuse.

Your Directional Control Ring (DCR) Core:   Your DCR core will need to be unbroken

Installation:

Remove the Steering Wheel to expose the inside of the column

Remove the Turn Signal Arm

Using Flat head screw driver, remove the directional control ring.  Be careful not to lose the “lock washer” under the DCR screw.  Also recover the DCR bushing

Unplug and Remove the Slide switch from under the dash

Remove the Bowden cable from the 90 degree lever inside the column.  Keep up with the screw used to hold the Bowden cable as it will be reused

Bend the 90 degree lever where is will be out of the way.  You may also remove the lever by drilling out the top, but not necessary.

Install the replacement Directional Control Ring (DCR) by first fishing the wire down the path of the old Bowden cable and the path shown below in figure #  Replace the Bowden Cable screw into the wire bracket and tighten

Place the Bolt into the DCR and insure the lock washer is on the bottom.  This will keep the DCR from getting loose as time goes on.  If you don’t have the lock washer, secure one before you go any further.

Lightly screw the DCR to the column leaving it loose so that you can lift the DCR bushing over the spring.  After the bushing is on the opposite side of the spring, finish tightening the DCR bolt.

Insert the Turn signal arm and check operation for any binding and you will have a distinct LEFT, RIGHT and CENTER.  If you don’t, stop at this point to find out.  Your bushing may have fallen out of place or the spring may have fallen down.
